The school wanted to explore a more natural transition of the foundation stage through to Year one and two with a more child-led approach. This short project kicked off with a trip to Stour Valley Arts in Ashford where we explored nature and outdoor sculptures as a stimulus. Through discussions with the Year 2 children and staff we looked at outdoor learning, living sculptures, animal habitats and artists whose work is influenced by nature, for example, Jem Finer, Andy Goldsworthy and Rosie Leventon.

The children created outdoor habitats on their school field, using found objects from their school and from their trip to Stour Valley Arts. The children also did various drawing activities, making nature sculptures and finally making their own colourful bird boxes which hung together in the school grounds. The project culminated in a trip to the recently opened Turner Contemporary art gallery to inspire the children further.
